Dogs sense of smell is truly phenomenal and impossible for us humans to relate to.
Unlike us, dogs mainly experience their world through their sense of smell.
Dogs sense of smell is 10 000 to 100 000 times stronger than ours, depending on the specific odour being detected.
A dog can detect some scents as small as 1 part in a trillion, which is a single drop in 20 olympic sized swimming pools. It's impossible for us to even conceive of what that means.
Importantly, dogs love sniffing and all breeds have a phenomenal sense of smell and get great joy out of it.
Scent detection is highly rewarding for dogs, offering powerful mental stimulation and engaging a significant amount of focus and concentration. This means it's a form of exercise, relaxation and 'mental mindfulness' for them.
Benefits of training your dog in scent detection include:
✅ Builds confidence in puppies
✅ Support impulse control in adolescent dogs
✅ Enriches the life and activity of all dogs
✅ Gives every dog a meaningful job to do, all dogs thrive having a job
✅ Overall calming effect on behaviour
✅ Increases the bond between you and your dog
✅ Keeps senior dogs mentally alert without physical strain
✅ Can be done indoors, outdoors and as part of the usual outings with your dog
✅ Scent detection creates a happy and optimistic dog

Give your dog a job so they don't go self employed.

10 minutes is more tiring than an hour's run.

Scientifically proven, sniffing releases happy
endorphins.

Mindfulness for dogs..... gives nervous/anxious
dogs something to focus on.

So we use a red Kong. When its on the grass, dogs can't see it , so they must sniff it.
Your dog will learn to touch the Kong, which is now the foundation for their future behaviour to indicate to you where it is. They will later learn to freeze when they detect the scent of the Kong in searches.
We start by hiding the Kong in various places for the dog to search and indicate, developing confidence.
We then move on to small pieces of Kong placed in small tins or pipettes. This teaches your dog that the scent, not the object is the target.
We now expand the search onto new environments, such as bags, chairs, vehicles and various other indoor and outdoor environments.
This helps keep the dog motivated and excited to search for the scent in realistic setup such as on their walks. This is the superpower of the scent detection.
